The Tree of Life: A Tohoshinki Fanaccount

I always get strong reactions whenever I talk to people about my travels (especially my methods). And especially when I talk about them to my fellow Japanese coworkers and friends. It would seem that not many would travel ten hours by local train or try to sleep at net cafes (much less do it ALL THE TIME). Still, that is how I travel in Japan. I have to admit that this time around, the Shinkansen would have been a better option, and the only reason I didn't buy tickets is that this was around Golden Week, so I didn't imagine I could still get tickets. I'll be honest: I did NOT want to make a trip to Takasaki and pay 1600 yen  for the round-trip just to make that discovery. Usually, I would have used the Seishun-18 pass, but it was out of season. Truly, I do not understand why they don't offer it more often (or year long even), and especially not during Golden Week? It's beyond me.

Oh well... No use pondering over what could be.

This time, I had a concert in Rifu (Miyagi Prefecture), which I'd visited once (see the post about my trip to Sendai, its capital). The trip by futsu densha was too long for me to leave on the day of (even by leaving with the early birds on the first train at 5:45 AM). I'd get to Sendai around 2:00 or 3:00 PM and that was out of the question, since the show was starting a few hours later and the goods would be far gone by then. So I left on the day before (Friday night) and got to the farthest station (Utsunomiya) that I knew had a net cafe close by, so I could spend the night. Woke up the next morning and left to go the rest of the way. I won't name the place because I did not like it at all. I really don't recommend it. But it was still better than nothing, I guess... I got to Sendai around 10-ish and went off to find a locker for my bags (because there are a lot). That is where I had my first major (see: EPIC) fail. I took a taxi to the venue. Now, that was the plan, and it should have been good and well, but you see, Sendai is NOT the closest station, far from it. I was supposed to leave my bags and hop back on the train, but I spaced out like an idiot, forgot that "detail" and blew it. The taxi ride should have taken about 10 minutes by car, but it ended up taking 30-40 minutes and cost almost 50 $.

(╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻)

(Oh by the way. To make up for all the money I had spent, I decided to bravely (stupidly) walk all the way back to Rifu Station (about an hour away). It was dark out and in the middle of nowhere (Rifu is not exactly Tokyo). Of course, the usual, classic phone-decides-to-die-on-me-like-a-bastard. At that point, I just... walked. It's a miracle I managed to make it back in one piece, on the same day, and that I was able to take a train back (it was getting pretty late by then).)

But hey! I saved money.

Well, I was there, and there was no going back, so I pushed the thought to the back of my mind and prepared myself for a long wait. The time was about 11:00 AM and the goods did not go on sale until 2:00 PM. So I meekly joined the line (the end of the line, after pulling a Stupid Gaijin and cutting in line in front of EVERYBODY). I did not have much to do and no one to talk to (remind me to go with someone next time), so I played on my DS and waited (im)patiently under the blazing (it was HOT) sun. In the end, I only bought a tour shirt and a reusable TREE bag... All that wait for a stupid shirt. But it WOULD have been sold out otherwise... probably. I also got a Cassie shirt, which I like a lot more, but I didn't have to wait for that.

(The TREE tour shirts are nice, but a little too pale and glittery for me).

I might have mentioned this before, but you see, the thing with ticket sale in Japan is that the popular shows require applying for a lottery. Winning gives you the "right" to purchase a ticket. Another point is that (I think) selection is always random, so the quality of your ticket depends on luck, not on how early you buy it. Of course, if you wait too long, the performance might be sold out before you get the chance to buy your ticket. Anyway, when I got to my seat, I was delighted to find out that I was really close to one of the catwalks (the stage stretches in a single narrow platform before branching out left and right). Whenever someone, whether it be Yunho or Changmin, would stand there, they would only be a few meters away from me. The downside to that was that since I was in the first row of that section, I wasn't allowed to stand (so as not to block the view, I suppose). In the end, it wasn't too bad. Whenever the boys would come our way, we would (literally) throw ourselves on our knees and lean over the balustrade waving like crazy for them to look our way.

Oh, the things we do... XDDD

(As you can see, the stage isn't far.)

While I was waiting, I stroke a conversation with some fans who were sitting behind me (and was soon chatting with the fans on my right: all middle-aged women, except for a young girl accompanying her mother). All I did was marvel over how close we were to the stage, but at first they seemed to think they had bothered me while finding their seats and settling down, so they apologised (naturally, lol). But then they started asking me questions, like how long I had been a fan and who was my favourite between the two. I did say that I had gotten into TVXQ's music around 2007, and that I liked both Yunho and Changmin, which is true. Yunho is our dear leader and although he looks manly, he's really just a big warm bear and a lovable idiot. As for Changmin, sure he's tall and handsome, but he hasn't lost his aegyo from olden days, and he's such a funny and clever guy. They complete each other so well. How can I choose? What I didn't say was that my favourite members are Junsu and Jaejoong, and that I'm a hardcore OT5 fan, in fear that they might be stans. Didn't want to start the concert on a bad note... What if they stoned me to death before the first song? (I kid, I kid. XD) The ladies were very nice! One of them lent me one of her light sticks (I'd forgotten mine) and she also gave me a bag of goodies. Maybe we'll meet again at a concert! (Though the shadow of military enlistment looms over the possibility of another live.)
The concert started with a short film projected on the gigantic screen. I don't remember in detail, but it consisted mostly of cool camera angles showing scenes of a modern city, mostly sky-scrapers, and close-ups of HOT-HOT Changmin and Yunho wearing awesome outfits (capes? pretty bling). When the first song started, the venue EXPLODED with lasers and flames, and let's not forget the fans' roars of excitement. The energy was so high one could have reached out and touched it. Best feeling. One more thing: The comments below might not apply only to one song, but overlap/relate to other songs as well. I tried to jot down some words to remember, but my head's a little foggy.

Concert
"Champion": From the first song, what struck me was how explosive and flawless the choreographies were, and that was especially true in this song. When I caught a glance of our two boys, it finally dawned on me that they were really there, and I realised how excited I was. Sure it wasn't the five of them, but Jung Yunho and Shim Changmin were standing before my eyes, and that was damn good enough. They were wearing long hooded jackets of a metallic color (hard to tell if they were gold or silver), just like in the video. Perfect performance!

"SCREAM": What I said above applies here too, as the two songs are similarly fast-paced and powerful. Though I like "Champion" better, "Scream" was pretty awesome, too, and Changmin reached unbelievably high notes without breaking a sweat (okay, that's a lie, Changmin's always dripping with it 30 minutes into lives, but still).

"Disvelocity": Not my favourite song, but it was still a very solid performance. I really like the chorus! So catchy. I think by that point, they had taken off their jackets (of course) and were wearing aristocratic black-and-white outfits that made them look like princes. The lighting and stage technicians really went crazy, what with the raising and rotating platforms. They exuded charisma from every pores and their voices were spot-on – not that I'd expected any less.

"Cheering": This is a personal favourite. I find it highly motivating and it raises my spirits whenever I'm feeling down, especially the chorus: 頑張ってよ。。。(Do your best, keep holding on...) This song will hit your feels where it hurts most, yet give you courage.

"Ai wo Motto" (愛をもっと?): This ballad was beautiful. The stage lit up while golden leaves were blown away on the numerous screens, maintaining the nature theme going on in this TREE tour. Everything and everywhere was scintillating (including fans' eyes, I'm sure).

The sparkling did not end with the song, and rather was continued in the following video, where we could see a boy trying to pick an apple from a tree. He did not have to suffer long, as Yunho made a bright entrance and retrieved the fruit for him, like an otherworldly creature. (Twilight Edward has nothing on this Korean vampire who sparkles much more prettily.) But this beauty would not endure... Suddenly, the sky darkened and bolts of thunder came crackling down, tearing the heavens open. Very poignant... Made me ponder about our future.

"Breeding Poison": As the VR ended, Yunho decided that it was "U-Know Time!" and came out (of the closet) wearing a black plastic outfit that clung to his body in a very interesting way. Time for Breeding Poison! I love how this song changes pace many times and picks up speed gradually. It's incredibly hard not to lose yourself in this irresistible tune. Just thinking about it as I type these words, I can't help but headbang at the memory of it. A personal favourite.
(I found this but I'm not sure if that's the one...)

"Shinjiru Mama" (信じるまま?): I'm not in love with this one, but I still quite enjoyed it. I was more worried about the way Yunho kept venturing too close to the edge of the stage while dancing like the crazy mofo that he is, I was afraid he was going to fall off. TVT

"B.U.T (BE-AU-TY)": As the Japanese would say, でた!!(It came out = it's here!) I wasn't expecting them to perform it, so I was delighted to hear it. There isn't much to say except that it was really awesome. The audience echoed the DUN DUN DUN DUN DUN DUN DUN, pretty cool. XD Really great song. Very colorful.

"I love you": This song is a very nice ballad, not the heart-wrenching kind that TVXQ seems to like torturing us with so much, but the feel-good kind. Very nice harmony between Changmin and Yunho's voices. There was something magical about the simple yet pretty piano accompaniment. I didn't know it well, but I love it now.

"Kimi Ga Odoru, Natsu" (With All My Heart ~君が踊る、夏~?): FORGET ANYTHING I SAID. Here I was feeling good and they had to take my heart and tear it out of my chest and CRUSH IT AND PUT IT BACK. MOTHERFUCKERS.   This is one of my favourite TVXQ songs ever. It was released pretty late in their career together (as five), which was a critical time. I guess you could say I have mixed feelings about that period... At any rate, this was gorgeous, but I would be lying if I said it didn't get to me. Yes, I teared up a little. And sang the lyrics at the top of my lungs. But I didn't cry. Not that I didn't feel like it... I've shed so many tears over TVXQ that I'm not sure I have any left... The memory of them is still painful and will probably never cease to be. But I don't regret becoming a fan, even now. Never.

Well done, guys. You did a great job with this one.

"Wedding Dress": As I was busy picking up the pieces of my shattered heart (what if someone stepped on them? so dangerous!), Homin replaced my painful feels with happy feels. This song is absolutely G-O-R-G-E-O-U-S. And its live rendition wasn't anything less. During some parts, the members and dancers assembled on a circular platform that lifted up and became a gigantic fountain. At other parts, two "couples" of dancers dressed completely in white danced in a very sweet yet romantic fashion. Yunho revealed after that one of them is actually a couple and that they're going in their second year of married life. Well, we could certainly feel their love in the way they flirted and moved. :)

Mind-blowing.

They seized the occasion to present their dancers to a number of Toho songs, including "Break up the shell", "Purple Line", "Superstar", "Nobody Knows", "Honey Funny Bunny", "MAXIMUM" (REMEMBER THE LEAKED OT5 VERSION)... Welcome back, feels, how I missed you.

If I may say this as a side note... ALL THROUGHOUT THE CONCERT, whenever Changmin opened his mouth, I swear I could hear Jaejoong talking... Maybe I'm crazy, or biased, or maybe I need to have my ears checked (and maybe my brain too), but something about his mannerisms, expressions, intonations... IDK. It all reminded me of Jaejoong. Are their voices so similar? I can't shake it off...

"Hide & Seek": Gosh, I love that one! ^O^ The boys came out wearing really ghei pink outfits in which they looked absolutely fantastic. There were more explosions and fancy stage effects.

"Crazy Crazy Crazy": Not much to say. Again, I'm not crazy about this one (I swear this pun was not intended! I am the queen of unintended puns.), but it's catchy (catch me... okay, that one was forced :D). It's Toho for fuck's sake, how could it be bad?

"Good Days": They did a very good job on that one, but it's probably the song I liked the least. Not sure why, I'm not a fan. For its defense, Yunho did wonderfully during the bridge.

There was a long talk segment after this one. It was all kinds of epic and I don't remember everything. Although I do have it recorded, I'm too lazy and unqualified in Japanese to translate it all. But here are a few good moments. First, the boys fooled around by speaking in a very girly fashion. Then they started going on about our voices and asked us to sing "Why? Keep Your Head Down) in a low and manly way, and also cheer that way. The result was hilarious and had us laughing a lot. It sounded a little like a person who really wants to throw up. At some point, Yunho asked us if our feet were tired and asked us to sit down a rest a little. (What a cutie~) I think Yunho messed up while saying "takusan" (it sounded like "takushan") and Changmin made fun of him casually. He made up for it by showing off how well he could pronounce "TREE" with an English accent (which sounded weird to me, but whatever XD). Finally, He told us about a dream he had, where three cows were pursuing him and he was really scared. O_O;; I didn't really get that part, but anyway. He wondered if he had died and saw a bright light, and then he realized that light must be the fans.

(I aww'd loudly at this!)

"Over" (Changmin solo): What a wonderful piece. Is there a limit to how high Changmin's voice can go? To be honest, I no longer know... What I'm sure of, however, is that he truly nailed this song. Such incredible power. He sure managed to touch my heart.

"Shout Out" (Yunho solo): What a change of pace! O_O Yunho was wearing a funky outfit during this song and he just flew around the stage with the mike stand for this upbeat song, and danced with it as with a cane, under a rain of neon psychedelic lights.

"Spellbound": THIS SONG IS AMAZING. You could see that the fans love it, if their screams were any indication. This is a recent single, so I didn't know it much either (I'm such a bad fan), but wow, what a performance. There were a lot of fan chants in this one, and I was clueless as usual. (>_<) Anyway, their voices were tops. Yunho's especially impresses me when I think of how it used to be back in the days – not bad, but not anything like it is today. He's made such progress. Oh, Changmin hit those notes like it was nothing. さすが。

When this was over, Yunho and Changmin were seated at a table, dressed in sparkly red clothes. The setting was classy and reminded one of a casino. We were shown a short skit in which they played cards and each ended up with one of the girls. They also broke into entertainingly orchestrated "fistfights". Changmin's fight was especially interesting. XD He just threw a few mini-punches and the other guy didn't react at first, but after a short delay, the guy literally threw himself on the floor. X3 Quality acting at its finest.

"Something" (Japanese version): This one I knew a bit more. ^_~ They actually did the rope thing at the beginning (to the rhythm of the bass), just like in the MV! It was so neat! I couldn't believe it... The fans echoed the chorus with a lot of enthusiasm and I joined them. This is what I call entertainment.

Then there was another VR. It was so cute! Not sure what the deep meaning behind this one was (if there was one), but that didn't matter. Basically, from what I could see, Changmin and Yunho acted as two "gods" who created life out of (paper?) with the twirl of a (cane?). Soon, many mini-Yunhos and mini-Minnies (couldn't resist) had risen and were going about their lives like they thought they were a bunch of Sims or something. With them came houses, trees... the whole deal, a city was born! Homin were full of aegyo as they waved those wands of theirs (AHEM) and the fans COULD NOT. EVEN.

I want a copy of that game ASAP.

"Why? (Keep Your Head Down)" (Japanese version): After what we had watched, I wasn't expecting that one to come on, but it was warmly welcomed. When Homin made a comeback with it in 2011, I wasn't a fan of it, but it has long since grown on me, so I enjoyed this. There was electricity in the air for that performance, so even if I had not liked the song, I couldn't have remained impassive during it. The raps, quick-paced as they are, were quite well executed. Also, count on Minnie to belt out that unbelievably high note at the end.

This boy knows no limits.
(I don't remember when this was, but I felt like posting it, so there.)

"Easy Mind": Again, a song that I did not use to like so much, but that I really love now. It's so cheerful! Also, during the whistling parts of the chorus, Yunho's aegyo went in overdrive. He acted like a big dummy, too, making weird faces and gestures. It's hard to describe, but it was hilarious. I guess this is the baka Jae spoke of. :)

"Humanoids" (Japanese version): I sang (yelled) so loudly during that one! (My audio recording is proof.) I kind of like Android better (they're two different songs, I know, but I tend to associate them, because) but I've come to like that one a lot more since I first heard it, so I was delighted at the fact that it was included in the setlist. If the voices that accompanied mine are any indication, I'd say that I wasn't the only one.

"TREE OF LIFE": I don't remember much about this one, except the song itself, which is gorgeous. The boys did a wonderful job. I read somewhere that Changmin had a bit of a hard time hitting the low notes, and thinking back (and listening to my recording), I guess it's kinda true during this song's verses... but the high ones were certainly not a problem. This marked the "end" of the concert.

We were left cheering for an encore for a few minutes (chanting "Tohoshinki" for them to come out, instead of "Encore", as it was obvious they weren't going to leave us hanging). Sure enough, they were back in a flash, with a classic, one of their older songs.

Encore

"miss you": As they qualified it, this was a 懐かしい song, one that brought with it a lot of memories. It was a bit painful to hear it performed with only two members, but not so much as to bring tears to my eyes, since as you may know, it isn't a ballad – far from it! Instead, I was able to enjoy it without it leaving a bitter taste in my mouth. It was explosive and I sang along with a lot of energy!

"Sweat": This was announced as a "new song", which it is, Tohoshinki's most recent single. It was the summer song that all of us needed. Although I can't say it's like anything they've released before. I LOVED IT! The beat changes a lot throughout the song, especially the chorus. Changmin and Yunho danced to it with a small piece of cloth like a towel, and I guess that was pretty fitting, considering the title. XD Definitely, this is going to be a solid release.

Not that they ever release weak titles.

"OCEAN": This is yet another single of which I didn't have much knowledge, but it was pretty good! Especially the "Ooga... Jaka... Ola... Give Me Beat" part, which everyone took part in.

"Somebody to Love": Here it was! "The Song That Never Ends" is how I refer to it. I used to skip the 2011 remake every time it came on my playlist... It took a LONG time for me to finally listen to it, despite having had it for a while. The reason is simple: this is a song that Tohoshinki seldom failed to perform in lives. A concert without it would have felt incomplete. This was always the song when, stripped down to a simple tour tee and a pair of sweatpants, the boys would yell for us to jump, jump, jump. The towel-twirling song, during which they would go crazy, goofing around on those little vehicles (whatever they're called), throwing signed balls and frisbees and grandmothers (I made that up)... It's a meaningful song we will never cease to cherish. :')

"Goodbye For Now": What a wonderful, feel-good song. It expressed well the vow that Tohoshinki made to protect all that Tohoshinki is, the fans, and to be back one day, to meet with us again. It was a great way to end the concert (for good, this time). The lyrics are so cute and it's easy to sing along. But that's not what made it so awesome. During the "pa-loo-pa-pa" part, Yunho stopped the song to make us repeat after him – the right way at first, then in a hilariously high-pitched (off-key on our part) voice. Once again, he overflowed with aegyo. Changmin then proceeded to show us how it's done, like a boss, and we (hopelessly, without a chance) tried to mirror his performance, and failed miserably. It was so funny! At some point, I couldn't do it anymore... I was laughing too hard.

So there you have it. I wanted to see Tohoshinki for such a long time, and that wish was able to come true. I'm truly grateful. Although they're not whole right now, although our stars don't shine as bright when there's only two of them, they haven't lost the talent, the perseverance, the humility that made them famous and lifted them to the heights of popularity and recognition that they enjoy today. Please don't ask me to move on. I don't think I will ever be able to. Even if it would not necessarily mean forgetting about what they once were, to move on... I couldn't handle it. I couldn't do it. My heart will never stop aching and longing for a reunion. No one can change those feelings. But for now, all I can and will do is continue to cheer them on and support them, whether they're on their own or broken up into two separate groups (that I prefer to call sub-groups). Call it what you may: selfishness, escapism, denial. It's not like I care. I'll never regret getting into their music and letting them in my heart. If I was made to choose between a TVXQ reunion and 50 million dollars, I'd choose the reunion without a second of hesitation. I swear it.

That's how precious they are to me.

But enough of this. I don't want to cast a shadow on the good memories, still fresh, of a lone trip I made to Sendai, 10 hours away from my place of residence, to meet two men, beautiful inside and out, that changed my life for the better seven years ago. Such distance is nothing compared to how far I would go for them.

The ends of the earth.

Thank you for existing, TVXQ. I love you.

I apologize for the bipolarity of this post.

I love trolling with your feels.
